Joe Lines, Product Lead for Business Payments at Modulr, delivered an insightful keynote at Accountex 2025 on transforming accounts payable processes through automation.

Lines, who joined Modulr after his company Nook was acquired in late 2024, highlighted how fragmentation, risk, and cost remain the three primary challenges facing accounting professionals in their AP processes.

"Those of you managing AP payments today spend an average of three hours on manual data each week and typically three-plus hours for multiple payments," Lines told attendees. "That seemingly small number amounts to over 40 days annually—time that could be reclaimed through automation."

Drawing on research commissioned by Modulr, Lines noted that while two-thirds of firms are open to adopting modern banking systems for AP processes, only one-third have successfully implemented such solutions.

The keynote detailed the typical fragmented accounts payable workflow that many accountants struggle with—from purchase order creation and invoice capture to payment approvals and remittance. Lines illustrated how professionals often navigate between multiple applications, manage approval workflows manually through email or messaging apps, and handle payments through various platforms depending on supplier requirements.

"Imagine switching between applications constantly—logging into accounting software for purchase orders, managing invoice approvals via WhatsApp or email, tracking everything in spreadsheets, using multiple payment platforms for different suppliers, and manually confirming remittances"… "It's an exhausting process that Modulr has streamlined into one integrated solution." - Joe Lines

Modulr's accounts payable automation platform offers comprehensive features including line-item extraction from invoices, purchase order matching, customisable approval workflows, payments in 35 currencies to over 180 countries, and automated reconciliation with accounting systems.

As a well-established fintech moving approximately ÂŁ15 billion annually and serving over 10,000 customers including 1,000 accountants and bookkeepers, Modulr emphasised that its Business Payments solution was built specifically with accounting professionals in mind.

Lines concluded his presentation by encouraging attendees to transform their AP processes "from fragmented to integrated, from risky to secure, and from costly to both time and expense-saving."

The company was demonstrating its solution at its Accountex stand throughout the conference, offering accountants the opportunity to see the platform in action.
